The Disciplinary Board of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has made a significant ruling regarding the qualification process for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
This decision, announced on Saturday, October 26, grants the Super Eagles of Nigeria three points and three goals due to issues surrounding their Matchday 4 match against Libya, which was originally set for October 15 in Benina. The ruling, signed by the chairman of the disciplinary committee, Ousmane Kane, outlines several important points. First, the Libya Football Federation was found to have violated Article 31 of the Africa Cup of Nations Regulations, along with breaching Articles 82 and 151 of the CAF Disciplinary Code. These violations prompted the board to take decisive action. As part of the ruling, Match No. 87, which was supposed to feature Libya versus Nigeria in the AFCON Qualifiers, has been declared a forfeit in favor of Nigeria, resulting in a score of 3-0. Additionally, the Libya Football Federation has been ordered to pay a hefty fine of USD 50,000. This fine must be paid within 40 days from the date of the ruling.
The board also dismissed all other motions or requests for relief presented by the Libya Football Federation, emphasizing the finality of its decision. Following this ruling, the Super Eagles of Nigeria are now in a strong position to qualify for the 2025 AFCON, with two matches still left in the qualification series.

Currently, the Super Eagles have accumulated 10 points from four matches, putting them four points ahead of the second-placed Benin Republic. In comparison, Rwanda has five points, while Libya, with only one point, has effectively been eliminated from the qualification race.
The Super Eagles have a chance to secure their place in the tournament during their next match against the Cheetahs of Benin Republic on November 14 in Abidjan. A win or even a draw in that match would guarantee the Super Eagles a spot in the final tournament, which is set to take place in Morocco from December 2025 to January 2026.
