Legendary Italian fashion designer Valentino Garavani has died, creating an outpouring of tributes from the global fashion community and admirers around the world.
Valentino passed away on Monday, January 19, 2025, at his residence in Rome, surrounded by family and loved ones. He was 92 years old.
According to details released by his representatives, a lying-in-state will be held at Piazza Mignanelli on Wednesday, January 21, and Thursday, January 22, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., allowing the public to pay their final respects. His funeral service is scheduled for Friday, January 23, at 11 a.m. at the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri, located at Piazza della Repubblica in Rome.
Born on May 11, 1932, in Voghera, Lombardy, Valentino discovered his love for fashion early in life. He began learning the craft under the guidance of his aunt Rosa and local dressmaker Ernestina Salvadeo before taking his ambitions beyond Italy.
At just 17, Valentino moved to Paris, where he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. He later refined his skills while working with renowned designers Jean Dessès and Guy Laroche, experiences that helped shape his signature style.
In 1960, he founded his own fashion house in Rome. Two years later, his international debut in Florence brought him recognition and established him as one of fashion’s most influential designers.
Throughout his career, Valentino became synonymous with elegance, glamour and craftsmanship. He was celebrated for his flowing gowns, ultra-feminine silhouettes and the iconic “Valentino Red,” a colour that became his unmistakable trademark.
As of the time of this report, no official cause of death has been disclosed. Valentino Garavani leaves behind a lasting legacy that transformed high fashion and continues to inspire designers across generations.
