Court Remands Native Doctor To Prison Custody For Slitting 25 Year Old Lover’s Throat For Rituals

A Chief Magistrates Court sitting in Awka, Anambra state, has remanded one Nonso in prison custody, on an offence of attempted murder of a 25 year old girl from Isuofia.

Nonso who hails from Umuona in Aguata local government area of the state was for the first time yesterday, 2nd November 2022, brought before the Children, Sexual and Gender Based Violence Court, sitting in Awka and presided over by His Worship, Genevieve Osakwe.

The charge was read to the defendant but no plea was taken.

Also, the court remanded the defendant to the Correctional Center and ordered that the police transmits the original case file to the office of the Attorney General.

Although the matter is coming up in December for the report of compliance by the police, the court has also ordered the police to make sure they arrest the absconded defendant and arraign him before the court.

Nonso is the man who slit the throat of his lover and wanted to bury her and her two children alive at his backyard in Isuofia.

Speaking with the victim after she was discharged from the hospital, the 25 year old mother of two explained that she went to see him because the suspect who is a native doctor had earlier promised her marriage.

According to her, on that fateful day the suspect sent a bike man to bring her and the kids to his house. She noted that the suspect didn’t allow them to go home that day because it was already late. She also said that the suspect later told her that he has a surprise for her using a white handkerchief to blindfold her. It was at that point that she struggled to know what was happening but unfortunately it was late as the said suspect had already brought a knife and started slitting her throat.

The victim further noted that although she struggled for her life but she was overpowered and dragged to an already dug 4-5ft grave at the suspects backyard and she was pushed into the grave. She also said that the suspect who throw a big stone over her head went to bring shovel and that made her to start shouting thereby alerting the suspects sister who had long slept off.

According to her, it was the suspects elder sister who came to her rescue after she had also alerted members of the public who in turn captured the said native doctor but by then, the bike man who was his accomplice had taken off.

When the matter was brought to the attention of the Commissioner for women and social welfare, she quickly made arrangements for the victim and her two children through her Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) response team.

The women and social welfare boss, Hon Ify Obinabo further ensured the matter comes up in court to serve as a deterrent to others who engage in such dastardly act.
