Gunmen have attacked the convoy of Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, the member representing Isialangwa North and South Federal Constituency of Abia State in the House of Representatives. The attack, which happened at approximately 9 p.m. in Ubakala, Umuahia South, resulted in the death of a police officer attached to the lawmaker and left another officer injured. the tragic incident occurred on November 17, 2024
According to sources, the convoy was intercepted by assailants dressed in black and wearing police-style armored jackets. They reportedly used a Toyota Corolla to block the convoy. At the time of the attack, Hon. Onwusibe was not in the vehicle, but two police officers and a driver were present.
The attackers allegedly opened fire on the convoy’s escorts after identifying them as police officers. The gunfire exchange led to the death of one officer, while another sustained injuries. The attackers fled the scene as officers from the Ubakala police station responded with gunfire.
Efforts to contact the Abia State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer were unsuccessful at the time of reporting. However, police sources indicate that investigations are ongoing and officers are actively pursuing the suspects, believed to be kidnappers.
This incident has added to the growing concerns over the safety of public officials and the security challenges facing the region. Authorities are expected to release further updates as the situation develops.
