23-Year-Old Herdsman Arrested By Police In Bayelsa With AK-47, 30 Rounds Of Ammunition

The Bayelsa State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 23-year-old herdsman, Mohammed Usman, for unlawful possession of an AK-47 rifle and 30 rounds of ammunition.

The suspect, an indigene of Borno State, was arrested on January 7, 2025, at approximately 4:15 pm, during a routine stop-and-search operation by the Safer Highway Patrol Team along the East-West Road in Bayelsa State.

According to police sources, the suspect was travelling in a commercial Sienna minibus when officers flagged it down for inspection. During the search, two passengers reportedly fled into a nearby bush, but Usman was arrested.

“Upon searching his Semovita bag, officers recovered an AK-47 rifle along with two magazines loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition,” one of the sources stated, adding that the suspect is a herdsman of Fulani heritage.

The Bayelsa State Police Command Public Relations Officer, ASP Musa Mohammed who confirmed the incident to SaharaReporters on Tuesday, noted that investigation into the case is ongoing.

“The suspect is currently in custody, and an investigation is ongoing,” he said
