The Abia State Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Hon. Chaka Chukwumerije, narrowly escaped a suspected assassination attempt two nights ago when unknown gunmen opened fire on his vehicle along the OkigweโUmuahia road.
Chukwumerije, a prominent member of Governor Alex Ottiโs cabinet, was reportedly returning to Umuahia when the assailants, trailing his vehicle, launched a sudden attack. Despite the intense gunfire, the Commissioner and three others in the vehicle escaped unhurt, though the vehicle was severely damaged and riddled with bullet holes.His brother, Dike Chukwumerije, confirmed the harrowing incident, describing it as a deliberate attempt on the life of the Commissioner. He highlighted Chakaโs tireless commitment to the development agenda of the Otti administration.
โChaka has buried himself in his work. Heโs been selfless, focused, and fully aligned with the reform-driven government of Alex Otti,โ Dike stated. โUnfortunately, it is often people like himโcommitted to doing the right thingโwho face the greatest threats in our system.โ
The family expressed deep gratitude to God for sparing Chakaโs life and reaffirmed their resolve to continue serving the people of Abia State with unwavering dedication, despite the dangers.
As of the time of this report, neither the Abia State Government nor security agencies have issued an official statement, but an investigation into the attempted assassination is expected to be launched.
