COOU University Anambra Gets First Female VC In Its 23 Years Of Existence

Professor Kate Azuka Omenugha has been appointed as the new Vice Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu University, formerly Anambra State University, by Professor Chukwuma Soludo, the Governor of Anambra State. The appointment which came as the tenure of office of Professor Greg Nwakoby, comes to an end this weekend, is significant to the effect that this would be the first time in its twenty-three years old history that the university is having a female Vice-Chancellor.

The appointment which was announced on Wednesday by the Governor’s press secretary, is one appointment that has been variously described as meritorious. Professor Kate Omenugha is a professor of mass communication in Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, and the second female professor of mass communication in Nigeria. In terms of experience in administration, she was commissioner for education in Anambra State for eight years between 2014 and 2022, and therefore the longest commissioner for education to serve the government of Anambra State.

During her time as commissioner for education in Anambra State, the Ministry of Education received many laurels and awards within Nigeria and internationally. Various innovative efforts were introduced in teaching and learning experiences in Anambra State. She also made efforts to strengthen learning for children with special needs across Anambra State.

In her new role as the Vice Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu University, Prof. Omenugha is expected to bring her expertise, experience, and contacts not just in the management of the institution, but also in repositioning the university as a top learning and research institution with recognized and verified rankings by relevant global, regional and national organizations.
