Rivers state witnessed a shameful spectacle today as pandemonium broke out inside Government House between Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd), the sole administrator and his own aides.
In a twist of irony, those who once shielded and served him turned against him, furious that he was attempting to pack out of office without settling their allowances and entitlements. Shouts filled the air as aides and even some of his security detail wailed openly, accusing Ibas of trying to “sneak away” with Rivers State’s wealth while leaving them empty-handed.
Closes sources inside the Government House disclosed the scene grew so tense that his Chief of Staff was forced into frantic appeals, begging the angry aides to calm down with vague assurances that “something will be done.”
For Rivers people, the pandemonium is more than a quarrel over unpaid aides it is a symbol of Ibas’ disastrous stay. A man entrusted with stewardship squandered both resources and trust, leaving bitterness in his wake. Now, as his exit looms, even those closest to him cannot hide their disillusionment.
It is a tragic reminder that when leaders plunder recklessly, they not only betray a state but also destroy their own legacy. Posterity will not remember Ibok-Ete Ibas for honour, but for the pandemonium and disgrace he leaves behind.
