Rivers Road Transport Workers, Soon To Enjoy Routine Eye Checks, Other Health Packages

Road transport worker under the aegis of
National Union of Road Transport Workers, Rivers State Council, would soon enjoy routine eye checks and other basic health care services of great quality without passing through financial strain.
This disclosure was made by the Executive Secretary/ Chief Executive Officer of Rivers State Contributory Health Protection Programme (RIVCHPP) after the signing of a memorandum of agreement between the state health insurance agency, RIVCHPP, and the leadership of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Rivers State Council in Port Harcourt, on April 23rd, 2026.
According to Dr. Agala, having the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Rivers State Council, come on board the health insurance scheme is very critical towards expanding health coverage of the state and very beneficial in improving the health status of the drivers, who are key in driving the economy of the state.
The RIVCHPP Executive Secretary, who was greatly elated by the signing of the agreement, described it as the proper entry of the agency into the informal sector of the state.
On his part, the State Chairman of Rivers State Council of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Comrade Boma Tom George, described the functionality of RIVCHPP as something wonderful.
Comrade Tom-George, who spoke through the branch Secretary of the Union, Dr. Joshua Eserenwa who said that the transport sector occupies a very great chunk of the economy, averred that drivers need to be healthy so as to be productive in carrying out their daily assignments.
The unionist stated that it is now mandatory for all members of the State Executive Council of the Union, as well as all branch officers of the union, to be enrolled into RIVCHPP’s programmes and packages, while the union would continue to sensitise all its members to see the need to also enrol.
The State Chairman also informed that the union would work out modalities on how best their members can pay the required premium of N25,000 per annum so that it looks seamless and not burdensome to the members.
The Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of RIVCHPP, Dr. Vetty Agala and the State Chairman of the State Council of NURTW, Comrade Boma Tom-George, signed the agreement on behalf of the two organisations.
