The Rivers State Government is to commence the process for the promotion of civil servants in the state and employment of five thousand workers into the state civil service soon.
Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike announced this today when the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and State Joint Public Service Negotiating Council, paid him a courtesy visit at Government House, Port Harcourt.
Governor Wike stated that the list of membership of the Civil Service Commission will soon be forwarded to the State House of Assembly for confirmation in order to facilitate the process for the promotion of civil servants and employment of the five thousand workers.
The Governor who noted that his administration has been consistent in the payment of monthly pension and gratuities to retired civil servants, expressed dismay over the attitude of the immediate past Chairman of the NLC, Beatrice Itubo for blackmailing the administration through falsehood.
He hinted that it was as a result of the strained relationship between the state government and NLC under the leadership of Beatrice Itubo that affected the promotion of civil servants, assuring that he will do everything possible to ensure that workers in the state are promoted under the new NLC leadership.
Governor Wike admonished the leadership of NLC to utilize the opportunity that has been presented to civil servants through the candidature of Siminalayi Fubara and Professor Ngozi Odu of the Peoples Democratic Party, who are both technocrats, by ensuring their victory.
The Governor who described Siminalayi Fubara as workers candidate, urged the NLC leadership and its affiliates unions to champion his campaign, emphasizing that as a former Accountant General in the state who is well abreast with the yearnings and aspiration of civil servants, they will be number one beneficiaries of the government.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Comrade Alex Agwunwor, commended Governor Wike for building befitting secretariat for NLC and TUC in the state, saying insinuations that the government is anti labour is misplaced priority.
Comrade Agwanwor expressed the readiness of NLC to partner the state government for the overall benefit of workers in the state.
Also speaking, Chairman of the State Joint Public Service Negotiating Council, Comrade Emechete Chuku, lauded Governor Wike for the consistent payment of workers salaries as well as pensions and gratuities for retirees.
He also applauded the governor for the opportunity given their former members, Siminalayi Fubara and Professor Ngozi Odu to fly the ticket of the PDP in the forthcoming governorship election in the state, assuring that workers will mobilize fully to ensure the victory of the PDP.
